BETON.HOFI – TARR BÉLA | MUSIC VIDEO OF THE WEEK

Shot on 16mm and realized through the work of nearly 200 collaborators, this Music Video of the Week uses scale, choreography, and controlled chaos as narrative tools. Built around four carefully constructed shots, the production explores how collective movement and artistic expression can become a disruptive force.

Below, director Jakob Ladányi Jancsó shares insight into the collaborative process behind the video — from coordinating large-scale scenes under tight constraints to navigating the creative and logistical challenges of staging unrest with precision.

A Large-Scale Collaboration Built on Precision and Trust

From the outset, the production was conceived as a massive collaborative effort — one where creative leadership, technical execution, and logistics had to move in sync.

“This music video is the result of the joint work of nearly 200 people. The production designer and the cinematographer were definitely very important creative pillars of the project who drove the vision.

Our producers supported creative freedom while navigating a tight budget and they participated in the brainstorming. Also, the costume designer was extremely important to make sure the people looked authentic and the choreographer masterfully orchestrated the 140 extras.

Even though the video consists of 4 shots the editor who is my long-time collaborator was there on set (and during the rehearsals) to make sure the rhythm of the scenes was right so we won’t have to troubleshoot too much later in the editing room.”

From First Idea to Final Frame

The creative process unfolded over several weeks, shaped as much by locations and rehearsals as by the original concept.

“The whole process, from the initial spark of an idea to the final day of post-production, spanned nearly two months.

First we were brainstorming and came up with the core elements and scenes. The most rigorous phase was the location scouting.

Once we secured the main set, the final scene structures and rehearsals could begin. The locations shaped the initial vision significantly and lots of new ideas emerged during the rehearsals.

The shooting took two days.”

Rewriting the Plan Mid-Shoot

One of the production’s most demanding sequences required rapid adaptation under intense technical and logistical pressure.

“Shooting the riot scene was extremely difficult. The nearly two minute long scene was shot on 16mm film with 140 extras, 20 stunts, a dog, pyrotechnics and special effects.

We originally wanted to shoot with a ronin, but the device didn’t work on set, so we had to change to hand-held camera and were forced to rethink the entire choreography in the middle of the day.”

A Moment of Stillness 

We asked director Jakob Ladányi Jancsó for his favourite moment in the music video:

“When they put Beton.Hofi down on the ground in the field and all the people dressed in black appear in the shot.”

Art, Language, and the Threat

At its core, the video is driven by a belief in the disruptive power of artistic expression.

“The core idea of the video is that art and words can be extremely powerful and are even capable of starting a revolution. They are dangerous for those in power when used in such a powerful way as Beton.Hofi does.”
